Alberta Ballet School is recognized as one of Canada’s leading dance schools.  Alberta Ballet School provides training within open and professional division programming to over 1,000 students annually.

Alberta Ballet School’s accredited private academic and artistic Professional training program is provided to students Grade 7 though to 12, with a academic student base of approximately 100 students from across Canada, and international locations.  The academic program allows students to complete the requirements for an internationally recognized Alberta High School Diploma and is designed to blend seamlessly within the artistic program and training.  The School also offers a Residence Program for non-local professional students based at Mount Royal University campus. 

Alberta Ballet School is currently seeking a permanent Academic Principal to join the Academics Management team.  

Ideal Start Date:  August 2020

Reporting to: Director, Alberta Ballet School

Location: Calgary

Type of Position: Regular Full Time

Direct Reports: Academic Teachers, Academic Administrative Assistant, and Residence Department

 

Purpose:   The Academic Principal is primarily responsible for providing leadership to the school. The position is accountable for meeting the obligations and responsibilities of the School Act and all other appropriated statutes in addition to policies, regulations and procedures of the Alberta Ballet, School Committee and its Board of Directors. The Principal is accountable for optimizing student learning within a safe and caring environment.

Qualifications

  •  Valid Alberta Professional teaching certificate
  • The completion of a master’s degree in a related discipline from an accredited institution
  • A minimum of (3) years of successful experience as a school principal
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and public relations skills
  • Ability to foster collaborate positive working relationships and establish rapport
  • Ability to work effectively with school personnel, parents, students, and community members.
  • Must successfully pass a Criminal Record Check and vulnerable sector check

Responsibilities

         Leadership:

  • Work closely with the Director of Alberta Ballet School to develop and implement the School vision and goals
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of current pedagogy and curriculum
  • Implement strategies for addressing documents of student achievement
  • Ensure that student assessment and evaluation practices throughout the school are fair, appropriate and balanced
  • Implement the effective supervision and evaluation to ensure that all teachers consistently meet the Alberta Teaching Quality Standard (TQS)
  • Oversee and evaluate the educational program according to Alberta Education expectations
  • Articulate and advocate the mission of the Alberta Ballet School for students, families, staff, and community
  • Promote and model life-long learning for students and staff
  • Provide leadership for school fundraising activities and maintain accountability for all funds collected according to school/board policy
  • Liaise with school administration to aid in the marketing and promotion of the school and student recruitment
  • Provide professional growth opportunities for staff

Operations Management

  • Oversee program evaluation, personnel management, office operations, emergency management and school budgets
  • Ensure that all health and safety considerations are attended to and all health and safety policies and regulations are observed
  • Oversee ongoing program evaluation, including curriculum standards and curriculum development
  • Oversee residence and work closely with Head of Residence to ensure school policies and procedures and the wellbeing of students
  • Oversee and manage Academic and Residence budgets and liaise with Finance team
  • Oversee programs for ELL students

Administration

  • Policy Development and Implementation
  • Manages Government Reporting: Annual Operating Plan, Annual Education Results Report and 3 Year Education Plan
  • Oversee the secure and legally compliant storage of all staff and student records and other documentation
  • Oversee the management of Student information System and Student Enrolment – (PowerSchool, ADLC)
  • Oversee the secure and legally compliant storage of all staff and student records and other documentation
  • Evaluate out of province credentials, evaluate graduation requirements.
